Here is part 2 of my "Grading the Wrestlers" feature. This time it’s on the wrestlers of "Smackdown":
A-Train. He’s big and he’s powerful but essentially has all the charm and charisma of a dial tone. Nonetheless, he remains one of McMahon’s favorites and will probably be around for a long time. GRADE: C
Big Show. Another celebrated underachiever in the WWE, but the promotion machine has really built him up as a monster heel. Of course, where is the credibility of beating a man roughly one quarter your size at the last Pay per view? Show ain’t getting any faster either. GRADE: B-
Bill DeMott. The former Hugh Morrus has only had a limited ring role since coming to the WWE but also gained considerable fame as one of the Tough Enough instructors. A remarkably agile big man, he probably will never get the acclaim he deserves. GRADE: C+
Billy Kidman. Kidman is an astounding aerialist in the ring, and has surprisingly remained relatively injury free during his WWE tenure. Kidman is just one of those wrestlers that can pull a five start match in the drop of a hat. GRADE: A-
Brock Lesnar. It’s a shame that the one thing that Lesnar will be remembered for in 2003 is for botching a 450 splash and landing squarely on his noggin at Wrestlemania. I’m not terribly sure that Lesnar has improved all that much since his debut, either. Nonetheless, he is one of the wrestlers that the WWE is banking on for the future of the company. GRADE: B.
Charlie Haas & Sheldon Benjamin. They have arisen from the ashes of OVW to become one of the better teams in the WWE. They work fluidly together, and having Kurt Angle as their mentor can’t hurt them either. Their singles wrestling credentials are a bit murky, but the future is bright. GRADE: B+
Chavo Guerrero. Until his unfortunate injury, Chavo had found new life in the WWE as the Tag Team partner of Uncle Eddie, one of the finest wrestlers of our time. I always knew that he could do good things given the right opportunity, and it looks as though he’ll be around for awhile. Good deal. GRADE: B.
Edge. Here is a man that the WWE could scarcely afford to lose. An excellent ring tactician, outstanding microphone man, with charisma to burn, Edge won’t step into the ring again until next year. What a shame. GRADE: Inc.
Eddie Guerrero. One of the absolute best wrestlers in the WWE, Latino Heat has turned it up a few notches in the past several months, if that’s possible. He is an absolute wonder to behold in the ring, capable of both the high spots and the brawls, and is a Thursday night mainstay. GRADE: A+
Hulk Hogan/Mr. America. Hogan continues to know his role, and even though he’s well past his prime, there is no one on this planet that can evoke a crowd response like this man. He remains one of the greatest personalities ever in the world of pro wrestling—an absolute legend. GRADE: A
Jamie Knoble. Knoble has had a minor role in the scheme of things in the WWE, and, along with Nidia, has carved a nice little niche in the Smackdown roster. He’s a lot better wrestler than a lot of people give him credit for. GRADE: B-
John Cena. Cena still has a lot to learn, but is making great strides towards superstardom. Though his psuedo-Eminem schtick is kind of lame, he put on a surprisingly good match against Lesnar at Backlash. It can only get better for this young competitor. GRADE: B.
Johnny Stamboli. The Bull is finally being given a chance in the WWE, and the Full Blooded Italians (FBI) are fast becoming one of the best stables in all of wrestling. Stamboli still has much to learn but he’s another of those gifted up and coming stars. GRADE: C+
Kurt Angle. Here is a man who you truly can call the "Total Package". Angle has it all—looks, talent, incredible microphone skills and a lot more. Once he returns from surgery, he will no doubt continue to dominate. One of the top—if not THE top—wrestler in the WWE. GRADE A+
Matt Hardy. The lone remaining Hardy boy in the WWE has done an excellent job in his solo career and as a heel. Mattitude has gotten much better in front of the microphone, and continues to excel in the ring. A bigger role might be forth coming. GRADE: B+
Nathan Jones. So far, he is a work in progress. Perhaps brought into the big leagues of wrestling a little too soon, Jones has the potential to be a huge star, but his ability remains suspect and he lacks in the microphone skills as well. Perhaps it might be better to send him to OVW for seasoning. GRADE: D+
Nidia. She hasn’t really been given much of a chance but she has made the most of what she’s given. A surprise winner on the first "Tough Enough", Nidia has improved steadily but certainly is not a contender at this point in time. GRADE: C.
Nunzio. A prototypical Cruiserweight, Nunzio is continuing his "Little Guido" persona from ECW, and starting to taste success. Nunzio is a very talented grappler with a lot of personality and a great future. GRADE: B-
Rey Misterio. The smallest wrestler in the WWE, Misterio is still a marvel in the ring. All those high-risk maneuvers may shorten his career somewhat, but if he can stay healthy, he will always give you an outstanding match. GRADE: A-
Rhyno. His comeback hasn’t really been all it could have been, but its still early. Rhyno is a prime time competitor in the WWE but needs a great program to reestablish him as one of the most versatile, talented wrestlers in the WWE. Needs some work on his microphone skills, but Rhyno is blue collar wrestling at its best. GRADE: A-
Rikishi. His star has dropped substantially, but he remains a great worker for his size and one of the most popular wrestlers in the WWE. Part of his problem is that all his matches seem to be the same. The three "S’s": Stink-face, side kick, screwjob. The bookers need to try something different with the big guy. GRADE: C+
Roddy Piper. The Rowdy one, a surprise return at Wrestlemania, is still one of the most interesting people in all of wrestling. His skills have diminished substantially (not that he was a great technical wrestler by any means), but his sense of humor is still keen and he adds a lot of color to the Smackdown product. GRADE: Inc.
GRADE: inc.
Sable. Another surprise this spring has been the return of Sable to the WWE, seemingly out of the blue. Though not a great wrestler by any means, she plays the role of the bitchy sexpot as well as anyone this side of Joan Collins. GRADE: inc.
Sean O’Haire. Only recently returning to the Wrestling ring, O’Haire has already started to make a lot of noise in the WWE. A gifted athlete who has only been in the business 3 years, he has enough raw ability to go a long way in the WWE. GRADE: Inc.
Torrie Wilson. Three parts diva, and one part wrestler, Torrie is nonetheless in great demand in the WWE due to her Playboy exposure. She needs to improve her ring skills, much like Trish Stratus a couple years ago, and she will go far. GRADE: B-
Undertaker. The grand old man of the WWE just keeps chugging along .He has been involved with some of the greatest feuds in WWE history, and may be nearing the end of his career. He’s been out of action for the past several months, but may be returning soon. GRADE: Inc.
Next time, the announcers and other personalities of the WWE.
